Get to Know Us

PS My Family Matters (now called Power to Care) was started in 2014 by two mums from the Macedon Ranges in Victoria, caring for family members with a mental illness.

They had experienced the loneliness and unrelenting mental load of caring for a loved one.

Caring for them took up so much of their time, that they had no time to look after themselves and, as a result, their personal, social and professional lives suffered.

These two women created a peer support model, helping other carers to feel less isolated, better supported and back in control of their lives.

Now we are called Power to Care and we are a registered health promotion charity.

We are still run by carers, for carers.

We have expanded our service so that we:

  • Support carers, regardless of the diagnosis of the person/s for whom they care

  • Are available to carers across Victoria.

We can help you by:

1. Listening - you are the expert on your situation. We will listen to you and, with your permission,  we can share your story to service providers so you don't have to keep repeating your story.

2. Connecting - once it's clear what you need in order to be better off - whether that is physically, emotionally, socially or financially - we will work together to plan what happens next.

3. Reducing your load - we will give you as much or as little support as you need to connect with service providers.  For those of you who hate filling out forms or talking with service providers, we can help you out with this.

4. Reclaiming your power - we will work with you to advocate for a better deal for you.  This might be within your home, with friends and family, with service providers and/or within your community.

5. Partnership - we won't replicate all of the different services that are out there.  We will work in partnership with service providers to create a package of support that's going to meet your specific needs.
